Iconic Ruth and Gehrig Signed Photo by Arthur Hull Up for Auction

In the world of baseball memorabilia, there are certain pieces that hold immense historical importance. And one such artifact is a recently discovered photograph of baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, autographed by the iconic duo themselves. This unique piece, authenticated as a Type 1 original, captures a moment in the golden age of baseball and showcases the unparalleled legacy of two of the sport’s greatest figures.

The photograph was taken by Arthur Hull, a celebrated photographer known for his work with The New York Times and The Associated Press. Preserved meticulously, this photograph features Ruth and Gehrig during a relaxed moment at the Yankees’ spring training camp between 1927 and 1931. It not only highlights their camaraderie and joy but also serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era in baseball history.

What makes this signed photograph even more extraordinary is the level of care that went into both the autographs and the photograph itself. Keith Breitweiser, an acquisitions specialist at Lelands, the auction house handling the sale, marvels at the exceptional quality of the autographs, stating that they are “some of the nicest you’ll find.” As the two most iconic players on one of the most legendary teams, Ruth and Gehrig left an indelible mark on the game, and their autographs on this photograph are truly remarkable.

The journey of this photograph to the auction block is a tale of historical preservation and fortuitous circumstances. After Hull’s passing in 1969, his collection, including this signed photograph, was acquired by Karl Allison and a friend from Hull’s widow. Acquired for a nominal sum, the collection contained a treasure trove of negatives and photographs spanning Hull’s illustrious five-decade career. Among these treasures was the signed photograph of Ruth and Gehrig, which Allison decided to keep and preserve meticulously by storing it away from light, while creating a duplicate for display purposes.

Beyond its visual appeal, this photograph holds immense significance as it presents a rare opportunity for sports enthusiasts and collectors alike to own a piece of baseball history. Signed photographs of Ruth and Gehrig, particularly those authenticated as Type 1 originals and in excellent condition, are extremely scarce and highly sought after. Consequently, the upcoming auction set to begin on February 25 is expected to attract significant interest, offering a unique chance to acquire an authentic and tangible piece of baseball’s storied past.

The auction not only reaffirms the lasting fascination with Ruth and Gehrig but also underscores the importance of meticulous preservation and the role of photography in capturing and immortalizing the legends of the game. As this signed photograph seeks a new home, it continues to celebrate the enduring legacy of two of baseball’s most revered figures. Through the lens of Arthur Hull and the dedication of collectors like Karl Allison, this photograph has transcended time, serving as a testament to the monumental impact Ruth and Gehrig had on the game and American culture as a whole.
