Rare Find: 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Card on Auction

In the world of baseball memorabilia, certain items spark a fervor among collectors and enthusiasts alike. One such item currently making waves is a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that has undergone a significant transformation. Listed by eBay seller Greg Morris, this altered card has captured the attention of the hobby due to its distinctiveness and rarity.

The startling alterations to this Mickey Mantle card have been acknowledged and authenticated by Beckett Grading. Through extensive trimming, the card has lost much of its original background, with only slivers of the bottom and right borders remaining. The visible wear and creases serve as reminders of the card’s former glory before it underwent its drastic modification.

Turning the card over reveals another layer of complexity, as adhesive residue now obscures a portion of the original text. This alteration, while unconventional, adds to the card’s mystique and sets it apart from traditional collectibles.

Designated as Authentic/Altered by Beckett, this unique Mantle card has a history dating back to 2017 when it was first authenticated. Recently coming into Morris’s possession through a collection acquired from another auction house, the card now stands as a testament to the ever-evolving nature of sports memorabilia.

In a market where even low-grade Mantle cards command significant prices, this “Half Mantle” has garnered substantial interest for its unconventional appeal. Bidders are eagerly anticipating the final price this variant will reach, with expectations of it fetching a substantial sum despite its altered state.

While this particular altered Mantle card stands out, it is not the only one of its kind to surface. A similar modified Mantle card was presented by CSG/CGC last year, showcasing a different take on the altered collectible with its own unique set of alterations.

The ongoing auction for this distinctive Mantle card serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Mickey Mantle in the realm of baseball collectibles. As collectors and fans alike continue to track the auction’s progress, the allure of this rare and modified piece of baseball history remains palpable, highlighting the timeless appeal of one of the game’s most iconic figures.

For those intrigued by the story and significance behind this altered Mickey Mantle card, following the auction’s developments offers a front-row seat to witnessing history unfold in the world of sports memorabilia.
