Heritage Icons Photography Auction

Heritage Auctions has recently unveiled a stunning lineup of autographed photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, sure to captivate sports card collectors and enthusiasts alike. One of the standout pieces is a 1948 photo capturing basketball legend George Mikan in action, with his image mirroring that of his iconic 1948 Bowman rookie card. Adorned with Mikan’s signature in elegant blue ink, this 8×10 Type 1 photo is projected to command bids upwards of $20,000.

The theme of signed vintage photos continues to shine throughout the auction, with another notable piece being a late 1940s photo featuring Cleveland Browns icon Otto Graham, mirroring the image on his 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, complete with his signature. Equally significant is an autographed photo of Jackie Robinson from 1949, depicting the baseball trailblazer receiving his Silver Bat for clinching the National League batting title, a season in which he also claimed the MVP title. This particular Type I photo, personalized to “Jeff,” holds immense historical value.

In another compelling snapshot, a 1957 photo captures Robinson clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field upon retiring from baseball, showcasing poignant details such as his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, and equipment bag, alongside two bats, one of which belonged to Gil Hodges. This poignant piece is anticipated to draw bids exceeding $10,000.

Adding to the allure is a photo that served as the inspiration for Willie Mays’ illustrious 1952 Topps card, featuring Mays’ signature on the front, likely penned in the 1990s.

The auction catalogue boasts an impressive collection of over 150 vintage images, with some dating back over a century. Noteworthy among these is a photo from the 1919 World Series capturing a historic moment as Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther shake hands before the infamous game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Complete with its original paper caption and stamps on the back, this image is projected to commence bidding at $8,000.

Additional highlights in the auction include rookie photos of sporting legends such as Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), alongside various captivating images of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other esteemed pre-war sports icons.

Running until June 13, this auction presents a unique opportunity for collectors and sports enthusiasts to acquire a piece of sporting history encapsulated in captivating vintage photography. Explore the rich tapestry of sports heritage and iconic moments immortalized in these remarkable images.
