Topps Unveils Historic Negro Leagues Card Series Illustrated by Micah Johnson

Topps, a prominent name in the trading card industry, has joined forces with accomplished artist and former Major League Baseball player Micah Johnson to pay homage to the legendary Negro Leagues players through a groundbreaking card series. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in baseball history, celebrating the often-overlooked contributions of Black athletes in the sport.

Micah Johnson, renowned for his transition from professional baseball to the world of art, poured his passion and talent into creating intricate and captivating portraits of Negro Leagues stars for the Topps Negro Leagues Baseball Card Set. The meticulous craftsmanship showcased in each card serves as a visual tribute to the resilience and excellence of these trailblazing athletes.

The series made its grand debut with the unveiling of a card featuring the iconic Satchel Paige in Kansas City, commemorating the “Road to Rickwood” initiative. Leading up to the highly anticipated Rickwood Classic, a new card will be revealed every week, building excitement towards a special MLB game at Rickwood Field on June 20, 2024. This event not only honors the historical significance of Rickwood Field as the oldest professional ballpark in the U.S. but also pays homage to its legacy as the former home of the Birmingham Black Barons.

To elevate the commemoration of this milestone, colossal 24-foot tall replicas of each card will be proudly exhibited at various MLB ballparks across the nation, allowing fans and onlookers to marvel at the larger-than-life representations of these esteemed players. The fusion of artistry and baseball history in this card series offers a visually striking and emotionally resonant experience for collectors and admirers alike.

In addition to the captivating base cards featuring the vibrant illustrations by Micah Johnson, collectors have the opportunity to acquire limited edition Numbered Parallel Cards in each print run, adding a layer of exclusivity to the collection. These parallels, including the Silver Border, Blue Border, Purple Border, Red Border, Orange Border, and the ultra-rare Gold Border, enhance the thrill of collecting and elevate the value of these coveted items in the eyes of enthusiasts.

By releasing new cards every Thursday leading up to the culminating Rickwood Classic game, Topps is creating a sense of anticipation and fervor among fans and collectors eager to own a piece of baseball history. Through this innovative collaboration between sports and art, the Topps Negro Leagues Baseball Card Set stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and cultural impact of the Negro Leagues on the world of baseball.
